Strelitzia Nicolai
is an almost incomprehensible structure. Equal parts sophisticated, phallic & mesmerising.
Their composition is exceptional. At first glance, you see these huge clumps (I hate the word clump; let’s use array from here on) of green mayhem, a mess of thick density. Delve into the details & you’ll lose your mind. The inflorescence; a fancy botanical word to describe flowers, are in themselves, a work of art. The sharp explosive, denim & oozing white points dagger out underneath the thick & deliciously sculptured giant green leaves. These captivating flowers are actually known to science as Bracts; another fancy word for a ‘modified’ or ‘specialised’ leaf. At closer inspection these structures are utterly absurd. These sharp explosive ‘Bracts’ are a decadent navy blue, caressing these white, creamy pink sepals which almost glow under light like iridescent plankton. They’re a white unbeknownst to us, with these purple chalky tongues.
